Roommate is trying to screw me over.

Even though we are both on the contract he stated a few days ago that he intends to just leave with or without my permission. He initially stated that he would not be able to pay me any of the rent he owes “for a LONG while” (I’ve been covering nearly all of the bills the past two months) and that he “doesn’t give a f—-” about what happens to me. I found out that as long as I find a replacement I’ll be fine and I didn’t want to push the past dues matter… However, he now is reluctant to leave and I believe he has no intention of every paying me back.

I kindly sent him a text with a link regarding how to leave an apartment legally (submit letter to renters stating desire to leave and put forth an effort to find a good replacement). He suggested I lie to them about DEPLOYING, I guess he’d assumed that we’d get off without having to pay anything? (Then again prior to that bizarre idea he’d suggested we take out loans and credit cards and run them to the maximum limits then leave the country… the hell?)

In any case I’m beginning to worry about my belongings and financial safe being to a certain extent considering the simple fact that I’d had to use practically my entire pay to cover the bills myself. We’d verbally agreed prior to moving into this apartment that we’d both avidly look for employment as well as apply for unemployment until we got jobs, etc. He didn’t apply for unemployment til about maybe a week ago, yet he’s been out of the Army since November (he called someone saying he couldn’t handle the situation here because of me, yet I’ve not once pestered him about paying anything).

If anything I believe this guy was in an amazing place but now he intends to “screw me over” as he’s stated (or threatened) claiming that he can just leave and I’ll be the only one that will have to deal with debt collectors (why the hell would I be dealing with debt collectors?).

The purpose of this post is to get some frustration off my chest and to perhaps get some advice as to how to deal with this situation. I’m going to talk to the apartment peoples tomorrow to see what I can do about getting him out of here and to assure them that I intend on finding a replacement as soon as possible considering that this individual most likely is only thinking of himself. I’ve STRONG reason to believe he just took out some ridiculous loan, otherwise he’d not have the balls to talk trash to me. Ever.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or words of advice?
